The organisation must negotiate a new funding settlement before the current agreement expires in 2027, following a crisis last year involving scandals and a lawsuit from President Donald Trump.

Political presenter Laura Kuenssberg was paid £405,000 to £409,999, while radio presenter Scott Mills was sacked in March following allegations regarding his personal conduct.

Options for the future include retaining the licence fee, subscriptions, or ad-funding, alongside discussions with other British broadcasters about creating a "sovereign media platform".

Director General Matt Brittin described the funding crisis as "a moment of real jeopardy" for The BBC, adding that work to reinvent the broadcaster is underway.
